What is a fuse board?
A fuse board, also known as a consumer unit, is the central point of your electrical system. It controls and protects all circuits in your home.
Older fuse boards often lack modern safety features, which can increase the risk of electric shock or fire.

Common signs your fuse board is unsafe
1. No RCD protection
RCDs (Residual Current Devices) are designed to quickly cut power in the event of a fault.
If your fuse board does not have RCD protection, your installation does not meet modern safety standards.
If you are unsure, it may be worth arranging an inspection:

2. Rewireable fuses or very old equipment
Older fuse boards with rewireable fuses or outdated circuit breakers are a clear sign that an upgrade is needed.
These systems do not provide the same level of protection as modern RCBO-based consumer units.
3. A plastic consumer unit in a high-risk location
Plastic consumer units were commonly installed in the past but are no longer considered best practice, particularly if located under stairs or near escape routes.
Modern regulations favour metal enclosures for improved fire resistance.
4. Frequent tripping or unexplained faults
If your electrics are regularly tripping or circuits are unreliable, it may indicate underlying issues within the fuse board or installation.
A qualified electrician in Cambridge can assess the cause and recommend the best solution.
5. No surge protection
Modern homes often contain sensitive electronics such as TVs, computers, and smart devices.
Older consumer units do not include surge protection, leaving equipment vulnerable to voltage spikes.

6. Exposed wiring or poor workmanship
If you notice exposed cables, poorly fitted components, or general untidy wiring around your fuse board, this can be a sign of unsafe installation.
Issues like these are often identified during an EICR.
What should you do if your fuse board is unsafe?
If any of the above signs apply, the safest option is usually to upgrade the consumer unit.
A modern installation will typically include:
- RCBO protection for each circuit
- RCD protection where required
- Metal enclosure
- Optional surge protection

Is it dangerous to keep an old fuse board?
Not all older fuse boards are immediately dangerous, but they may not provide adequate protection by today’s standards.
Over time, wear and tear can increase the risk of faults developing, which is why inspections and upgrades are recommended when needed.
